Welcome to Young Minds!
I’m excited to launch Young Minds, a new content category where I connect curious young learners—and the educators and parents who guide them—to expert knowledge about artificial intelligence, education, and society. As an educator and learning technologies scientist, I believe AI literacy should begin early, explained in ways that spark wonder rather than confusion.
This first Young Minds post introduces a resource I created specifically for this purpose: a song that explains artificial intelligence to children in language they can understand and music they’ll remember.
What Is AI? A Song for Young Learners
Note to educators and parents: Enable Closed Captions (CC) on YouTube for sing-along support and reading comprehension practice.
Why I Created This Song
During my doctoral work at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I’ve studied how AI systems affect learning. I noticed a gap: most AI education resources target teenagers or adults. Young children encounter AI daily—in voice assistants, video recommendations, predictive text—but rarely receive age-appropriate explanations of what these systems actually are or how they work.
So I created “This Is a Song About AI” as part of my Equations & Echoes initiative, an open educational resource (OER) project that transforms STEM concepts into unforgettable songs. This isn’t just entertainment—it’s carefully designed science communication.

How This Resource Was Created
Educator-in-the-Loop Design
Every line of this song was crafted using Educator-in-the-Loop principles. This means:
- Expert pedagogical review at every stage
- Age-appropriate language verified against learning standards
- Conceptual accuracy maintained while simplifying complex ideas
- Iterative refinement based on educational best practices
Flesch-Kincaid Readability: “Very Easy”
The lyrics follow the Flesch-Kincaid readability metric at the “Very Easy” level, making them accessible to early and middle grade students (roughly ages 6-11). This metric measures:
- Sentence length – Short, clear sentences
- Word complexity – Simple, concrete vocabulary
- Syllable count – Mostly one- and two-syllable words
Aligned to Learning Standards
This song aligns with established K–12 Computer Science and AI literacy standards:
1B-AI-05 (CSTA / AI4K12) – Recognize Examples of Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life Students identify common uses of AI around them—voice assistants, image recognition, recommendation systems—building early awareness of intelligent technologies.
2-CS-02 (CSTA) – Explain How Computers Process Information to Solve Problems Students understand how computers collect, store, and process data to produce useful outputs, connecting computational thinking to real-world AI applications.
3A-IC-24 (CSTA) – Discuss Ethical Responsibilities of Using Automated Technologies Students explore ethical implications of AI, including privacy, fairness, and responsible design, fostering digital citizenship and human-centered technology awareness.
What Makes This Educational Resource Different
1. Developmentally Appropriate
Unlike most AI explanations that use abstract metaphors or technical jargon, this song uses concrete examples children encounter daily:
- “It helps you type and fix your text”
- “Suggests the song you’ll listen next”
- “Maps your path and saves you time”
2. Conceptually Accurate
While simplified for young learners, the content remains scientifically accurate:
- AI learns from patterns (machine learning fundamentals)
- AI processes data but doesn’t “feel” (distinguishing computation from consciousness)
- AI reflects human choices (introducing algorithmic bias and values)
3. Ethics-First Framework
The song explicitly addresses responsible AI use:
“Use it for good, for science and art, Build a world that’s kind and smart. Not for tricks or easy gain, Use AI with heart and brain.”
This teaches children that technology embodies human values—a critical foundation for future AI literacy.
Full Lyrics
[Intro]
This is a song about AI, my friend, Machines that learn, that think, that blend. AI stands for something smart, Artificial Intelligence—a work of art!
[Verse 1 – Learning Machines]
AI can listen, AI can see, It finds the patterns—just like me. When you ask questions, short or long, AI helps you find what’s right or wrong.
It learns from errors day by day, Adjusts its mind in its own way. Not a brain with bones or skin, But code and math that live within.
[Chorus]
This is AI, it’s learning each day, Helping the world in a digital way. From pictures and sounds to what we write, AI makes knowledge shine so bright!
[Verse 2 – Everyday AI]
It helps you type and fix your text, Suggests the song you’ll listen next. Maps your path and saves you time, Tells you weather, rhythm, and rhyme.
Doctors use it to scan a heart, Artists use it to make new art. From games we play to space we see, AI works quietly—endlessly.
[Chorus]
A for Artificial, clever and neat, I for Intelligence, learning’s seat. Together they form a thinking tool, But kindness first—that’s the rule!
[Verse 3 – Can It Think?]
Can AI dream or sing or cry? Can it feel stars across the sky? No heart, no soul, but codes that spin, It learns from all that we put in.
You set the path, you choose the goal, AI assists—but you’re in control. It doesn’t wish, it doesn’t feel, It follows logic, sharp and real.
[Bridge – Use It Right]
Use it for good, for science and art, Build a world that’s kind and smart. Not for tricks or easy gain, Use AI with heart and brain.
Protect the earth, design with care, Let fair ideas fill the air. AI mirrors what we do, So make it honest, make it true.
[Verse 4 – Big Dreams & Final Chorus]
AI helps farmers grow more grain, Predicts the path of sun and rain. Helps find cures, and saves the seas, Solves big puzzles with data keys.
It’s not alive, but it can learn, From every question, every turn. So teach it well, and watch it fly, AI can help the human sky.
This is a song about AI so bright, Guiding the future with learning light. It learns from us, and we decide, Together we shape the world with pride!
So think, create, and keep that spark, Use your mind to light the dark. AI is a friend when used with care, A tool for all, for all to share.
