Dr. Ivon Arroyo is a Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, holding joint appointments in the Manning College of Information & Computer Sciences and the College of Education. Her interdisciplinary work blends computer science, learning sciences, and educational psychology, with a primary focus on creating new technologies to help K-12 students learn mathematics.

Dr. Arroyo is known for designing intelligent tutoring systems such as the MathSpring platform, which provides personalized support to students by assessing their math skills, cognitive states (including confusion or frustration), and metacognition in real-time as they work. Her research on embodied learning explores “wearable learning” and “embodied games,” using mobile devices and wearable technology to create physically active games that help students learn math concepts. She also works on integrating computational thinking into the K-12 curriculum.

Dr. Arroyo holds a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) in math and science education and a Master of Science (M.S.) in computer science, both from UMass Amherst, and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in computer science from Universidad Blas Pascal in Argentina. Her work has been recognized with significant grants and awards, including a prestigious CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her research on “Wearable Tutors in the Embodied Mathematics Classroom.”
